Nishi Chaya District has a history dating back to the feudal era. In this part of the district, traditional restaurants and geisha houses still line the streets. On the second floor of the Kanazawa City Nishi Chaya Museum—established in memory of Seijirō Shimada, who grew up in the Chaya District—a traditional tatami room with red-painted walls is furnished with shamisen, taiko drums, and lacquerware, conveying the opulent atmosphere of the chaya entertainment of yesteryear. The Nishi Ryotei Association, which retains the atmosphere of days gone by, serves as a training venue for geisha. |
